In the course of our individual research programs, we have had occasion to utilize hetero Diels-Alder reactions as pivotal steps in natural product total syntheses. It became clear to us during the early stages of our work that this type of cycloaddition, although a potentially powerful synthetic tool, had found relatively little general use.
