This is a superb book to understand the excitement in biochemistry and to understand its relevance to human health. Stryer's book presents biochemistry in a completely different manner. Instead of traditionally presenting one topic after the other, it presents each chapter giving a representative molecule or system for explanation and characterization of the material in that chapter . For example, heamoglobin and myoglobin for explaining the three dimensional structure of proteins, lysozyme and chymotrypsin for explaining enzyme action, and a host of others. Each example is critically chosen, considering its role and function in life and metabolism. This makes the matter very interesting and practical. Paralleling this are given descriptions of diseases and biochemical disorders as well as historical perspectives. The last part, molecular physiology, gives a lucid exposition of the fundamental biochemical processes in living organisms. In fact, the whole point of view in the book is a physiological one. The book is unlike Lehninger, which is essentially a traditional textbook. Even though Lehninger is great as an introductory book, Stryer is, in my opinion, the book to read if you want to learn biochemistry as a discipline which should be viewed as an exciting excursion into human metabolism and life.

Review of new edition (Berg, Tymockzo):
I had written a favourable review earlier for a previous edition of Stryer. I rest my case for the latest edition too. Jeremy Berg and John Tymoczko, both accomplished authors, join Lubert Stryer in producing this time tested and comprehensive book. If you are someone like me, who believes that enzymes and proteins are the key to understanding the mysteries of life, then this book is for you. While it may not have as much coverage of nucleic acid chemistry biochemistry as some of the other books, I believe that the next revolution in biology is going to hinge upon our understanding of SYSTEMS. And while an understanding of genes is crucial as enabling knowledge, if you really consider all the actual action that happens in biochemical systems, almost all of it is mediated by enzymes and receptors. Stryer's new edition has literally hundreds of pictures and discussions of proteins and enzymes which explain the structure and function of these magnificent biological agents. The book has still retained the concise and yet comprehensive style which made its previous edition so good. Again, the book strikes a good balance between textbook and medical biochemistry, which is its great strength. Small boxes and side discussions throw light on the most interesting events connected with drug metabolism and disease. As a side point, the discussions about nucleic acid biology which the authors HAVE included are pretty good in themselves. Biochemistry is one of the most exciting branches of scientific research. This is because first of all it is highly interdisciplinary, enjoying a wonderful synergy with organic and inorganic chemistry, physical chemistry and physics, and of course, biology. Secondly, Biochemistry is an extraordinarily dynamic subject and biochemical knowledge doubles every five years. Discoveries in biochemistry directly affect medical science. In the 21st century, it continues to promise us radical understanding into the working of life, and any good biochemistry book should ideally convey this excitement to the reader. This one does. The bottom line is, if you want to get excited about the miracle that is called life, and want to do it in a rational way, Stryer is still one of the very best. I hope it continues to be so.

This text uses a case-study approach to present the core principles of biochemistry and molecular biology in the context of human disease to students who will be involved in patient care. Each chapter provides a specific patient report that includes the relevant history, pertinent clinical laboratory data, physical findings, and subsequent diagnosis. This is followed by a comprehensive discussion of the normal biochemical processes and reactions pertaining to the case, along with the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disease. In this third edition of the book, a new co-editor has aided in the substantially revised and more targeted selection of cases. The whole volume is now clearly focussed on intermediary metabolism and other topics central to biochemistry. There are new chapters on topics such as collagen structure, mitochondrial metabolism, and hyperhomocysteinemia and vascular disease. There is also more coverage of nutrional biochemistry, including new chapters on protein-calorie malnutrition, obesity, vitamin A deficiency, and iron metabolism.
The best cases were retained from the previous edition, and have been completely rewritten and updated to include recent advances in diagnostic biochemistry and the status of current therapies. Although the first edition was intended primarily for medical students, through the years the book has proven useful for a wide variety of students interested in the health science professions.

Das Kapital (Capital, in the English translation) is an extensive treatise on political economy written by Karl Marx in German. The book is a critical analysis of capitalism, its economic practices, and the theories which economists made about it.

The central injustice of capitalism, according to Marx, was in the exploitation and alienation of labor, a condition which a later Marxist thinker, Harry Braverman, in his work Labour and Monopoly Capital: the degradation of work in the 20th Century, called "the degradation of labour". The ultimate source of the new profits and value-added was that employers paid workers the market value of their labour-capacity, but the value of the commodities workers produced exceeded that market value. Employers were entitled to appropriate the new output value because of their ownership of the productive capital assets. By producing output as capital for the employers, the workers constantly reproduced the condition of capitalism by their labour.

Marx bases his work on that of the classical economists like Adam Smith, David Ricardo, John Stuart Mill and even Benjamin Franklin. However, he reworks these authors' ideas critically and carefully, so his book is a critical and innovative synthesis that does not follow the lead of any one thinker. It also reflects the dialectical methodology applied by G.W.F. Hegel in his books The Science of Logic and The Phenomenology of Mind, and the influence of French socialists such as Charles Fourier, Comte de Saint-Simon, and Pierre-Joseph Proudhon.

Marx said himself that his aim was "to bring a science [i.e. political economy] by criticism to the point where it can be dialectically represented", and in this way to "reveal the law of motion of modern society". By showing how capitalist development was the precursor of a new, socialist mode of production, he aimed to provide a scientific foundation for the modern labour movement. In preparation for his book, he studied the economic literature available in his time for a period of twelve years, mainly in the British Museum in London.

NUCLEAR PHYSICS TODAY
Nuclear physics deals with the properties of atomic nuclei, their structure and interactions, and the laws governing the forces between their constituents. The interactions in nuclei have their roots in the interactions of elementary particles, the quarks and gluons that together constitute nuclear matter. But additional dynamical forces, long known to exist in nuclei, cannot be understood with elementary particles alone, just as new cooperative interactions, not recognizable in nuclei or atoms, are known to exist in macroscopic materials.

The basic questions facing nuclear physics today span a broad range, including strong and electroweak interactions, and cover the properties of the physical world from the microscopic scale of nuclear forces to the large-scale structure of the universe.
