Free download of Nanocomposites: Preparation, Properties and Performance

Lorenzo H. Mancini, Christian L. Esposito, Alsayed Abdel Aal, V. A. Alvarez, E. M. Araujo, "Nanocomposites: Preparation, Properties and Performance"
Nova Science Publishers | 2009 | ISBN: 1604567988 | 272 pages | PDF | 15,2 MB

Nanophase materials and technology is the new application technology in recent 10 years along with the development of science and technology. Nanocomposites have attracted tremendous attention due to their potential applications in biomedical, catalytic, separation, chemical sensing, fuel cell, capacitor, microfabrication, tribological, resonant coupling, high flux gas transport and etc. Nanocomposite materials are complex of nanophase materials and other materials, it optimises the performance of traditional materials. Various nanocomposites have been synthesised in a wide range of polymerisation, sol-gel, deposition, magnetron sputtering, supercritical fluid, sonochemistry, laser, etc.Among these works, many strategies were addressed to improve nanocomposites mechanical properties by inclusions (fibers, whiskers, platelets, or particles). The embedding of inclusions in a host matrix to make composites, which gives material properties not achieved by either phase alone, has been a common practice for many years. Traditionally, composites were reinforced with micronsised inclusions. Recently, processing techniques have been developed to allow the size of inclusions to go down to nanoscale. With the recent developments in the nanoscience and nanotechnology fields, the correlation of composite properties with nanostructure has become a point of great interest. As a result, much of the work is still ongoing and there is yet to be a definite conclusion on the effect of nano-sized structure on nanocomposite systems. This book provides leading-edge research from around the globe on this field.

Free download of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy: Basic Aspects and Practical Applications, 4th Edition

Sune Svanberg, "Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy: Basic Aspects and Practical Applications, 4th Edition"
Springer | 2004 | ISBN: 3540203826 | 588 pages | PDF | 29,7 MB

Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy is a wide-ranging review of modern spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray, photoelectron, optical and laser spectroscopy, and radiofrequency and microwave techniques. On the fundamental side it focuses on physical principles and the impact of spectroscopy on our understanding of the building blocks of matter, while in the area of applications particular attention is given to those in chemical analysis, photochemistry, surface characterisation, environmental and medical diagnostics, remote sensing and astrophyscis. The Fourth Edition also provides the reader with an update on laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultra-fast spectroscopy, high-power laser/matter interaction, satellite-based astronomy and spectroscopic aspects of laser medicine. Important references are also brought up to date.

An overview of modern spectroscopic methods, intended to serve as a textbook for a course on the subject for senior undergraduate or graduate students in physics. It should also be useful for students of astrophysics and chemistry. Assumes a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics and atomic physics.

Sune Svanberg is a professor of physics and head of the Atomic Physics Division of the Lund Institute of Technology. He is also the director of the multi-disciplinary Lund Laser Centre at the Lund University. He has extensive research experience in radiofrequency, optical and laser spectroscopy, and in the use of lasers in combustion diagnostics, environmental monitoring, and medical diagnostics and treatment, and is thus in good position to cover the vast scope of the book. Sune Svanberg has coauthored almost 500 papers and trained a large number or undergraduates and graduates in basic and applied atomic and molecular spectroscopy. He served extensively in international organisations and scientific advisory committees. He is a member of five academies and holds three honorary doctor degrees.

Biochemical Technology, Part A By L. Bulow
Publisher: Elsevier Science | 1996 | ISBN: 0762301147 | Pages: 382 | PDF | 4.99 MB

Hardbound. In December 1992, the Department of Pure and Applied Biochemistry at the Chemical Center in Lund, Sweden, organized an international meeting, the Mosbach Symposium on Biochemical Technology, to celebrate the 60th birthday of professor Klaus Mosbach, one of the founders of modern biotechnology. The history of Pure and Applied Biochemistry had its start in 1970, a couple of years after the foundation of the Chemical Center. Klaus Mosbach has been its professor and head of Pure and Applied Biochemistry since its start. During the 1980's he also maintained a professorship at the ETH in Zürich, Switzerland.

Free download of Plant Breeding and Biotechnology: Societal Context and the Future of Agriculture

Denis Murphy, "Plant Breeding and Biotechnology: Societal Context and the Future of Agriculture"
Cambridge University Press | 2007 | ISBN: 0521823897 | 452 pages | PDF | 1,7 MB

This comprehensive survey of modern plant breeding traces its history from the earliest experiments at the dawn of the scientific revolution in the seventeenth century to the present day and the existence of high tech agribusiness. Murphy tells the story from the perspective of a scientist working in this field, offering a rationale and evidence-based insight into its development. Crop improvement is examined from both a scientific and socio-economic perspective and the ways in which these factors interact and impact on agricultural development are discussed, including debates on genetically-modified food. Murphy highlights concerns over the future of plant breeding, as well as potential options to enable us to meet the challenges of feeding the world in the 21st century. This thoroughly interdisciplinary and balanced account serves as an essential resource for everyone involved with plant breeding research, policy and funding, as well as those wishing to engage with current debates.

Free download of Biotechnology-John E. Smith

John E. Smith, "Biotechnology"
Cambridge University Press | 2009-01-08 | ISBN: 0521884942 | 278 pages | PDF | 3,2 MB

Biotechnology is the major technology of the 21st century, yet few people realise how much it impacts on many aspects of human society. The defining aim of this new fifth edition is to re-establish the correct understanding of the term biotechnology. Using the straightforward style that made the previous editions of his textbook so popular, John Smith once again helps students with the deciphering and use of biological knowledge. He explains the historical developments in biotechnology and the range of activities from brewing beer, the treatment of sewage and other wastes, and the creation of biofuels. He also discusses the innovations in molecular biology, genomics and proteomics, systems biology and their impact on new biotechnology. In this edition John Smith also re-examines the ethics and morality of aspects of biotechnology and puts new emphasis on stem cells and regenerative medicine and micro RNA.
